Section II: Parts of the United States
|
Colorado
Description: Colorado is unique in that the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains so abruptly.
Things to Notice:
- There is a very sharp elevation change where the Great Plains and the mountains meet.
- Despite its reputation as a mountain state, eastern Colorado looks very much like Kansas in its flatness.
- The North Platte River and its various forks are visible in the northeast as it winds its way to Nebraska. (Interstate 80 follows this river.)
- Pikes Peak is at the north-south center of the plains/mountains onterface. Colorado Springs is just east of there.
- Denver is north of there, where the plains/mountains interface curves slightly west.
- From the elevations, you could see the system of valleys and passes where you would want to put a railroad that would cross the mountains, which is where it actually goes.
- As winds also rush down the mountain front, having the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), which looks at storms, in Boulder Colorado obviously makes sense.
