Section IV: Molecules
The “Tic-Tac-Toe Molecule” (2x2 Host Grid)

Description: Through the power of controlled chemical synthesis, scientists can now prepare the equivalent of molecular structural “rebar” with a pre-designed site that can be connected by a form of molecular "spot welding" to create molecular grids, ladders, rack, etc. The model represents the use of molecular fragments know as "phenanthroline" to form the metal binding (welding) site along the rods.

Things to Notice:
  • This particular example forms a 2X2 grid; however the spacing in the grid is perfectly arranged to allow flat molecules to intercalate into the grid.
  • Such constructions may find applications as selective sensors for molecules.
