Section IV: Molecules
Protein Kinase

Description: Protein Kinase A is the simplest example of a set of proteins that control the way cells in your body respond to external events. These proteins are activated by things like hormones or stress factors. They add phosphate groups to other proteins, which changes the structure and activity of the other proteins

Things to Notice:
  • The exact shape of a protein is very important to what the protein molecule reacts with in your body and what it produces.
  • Other proteins control which genes are expressed, when a cell divides, whether the cell becomes a liver cell or a muscle cell, and many other things vital to life.
  • Failures or errors in the functioning of protein kinases are one of the causes of some kinds of cancer.
