From Caterpillar to Butterfly
|
Introduction:
This lab has 3 different parts. You can elect to divide the girls
into groups and have them rotate or do each activity with the
full group.
|
 |
|
Its a good idea to read the book to everyone at the beginning so that
everyone has the necessary background to complete all of the activities.
Activities 2 and 3 are best done with half of the group. Split
the group in two and rotate. |

Activity 1: Book and Discussion
Start the lab with reading the butterflyy, for the younger girls
or those with language difficulties, use the manipulatives included
to explain the stages of butterfly development. After reading the
book, I suggest using the Life Sequences cards to stimulate further
discussion.

Activity 2: Making a Butterfly
In this art project, the girls will make butterflies using liquid
watercolor art circles, liquid watercolors, and pipe cleaners.
Before class, the teacher should put diluted (50%) watercolor
paint into each of the 4 sets of watercolor jars. There are 6
colors of watercolors provided with the set. Each girl should
decorate an art circle, as she desired using the liquid watercolors.
(Use a q-tip to |
|
| apply the paint.) When
done, fan-fold the circle and use half a pipe cleaner to make
a body. The ends of the pipe cleaner should be curled to make
the antenna. There is a sample of this project in the tub.
Part 3: Making a Book
In the final exercise each girl should make a butterfly development
book. Pass out the 2 pages of the book worksheets and scatter
the stamps around the room. Each girl should put the appropriate
stamp on each page. She can then color in the pictures using the
colored pencils. When finished, cut around the boxes and staple
to make a book. If time remains, read the book as a group.
